The Shimano Spirex FG is one of the latest reel lines to hit the market, and the model is already the talk of the local watering hole. At a glance, this reel is stylish and simplistic. It sports a beautiful baby blue body and seems to include some essential elements, including a lightweight graphite frame and rubber handle grips.

There are three separate Spirex FG reels. Each one is designed to handle saltwater fishing of different potential catches, ranging from light to moderate to heavy. Although each model is supposed to be for consecutively heavier fish, the Shimano Spirex FG actually only works best for someone seeking a mid-tier reel with moderate drag and similar characteristics.

Before going into the characteristics which are consistent across the different models, here is a brief overview of the features built into each of the three reel designs.

Shimano Spirex FG Models

SR1000FG

The SR1000FG is the first model and also the most lightweight. It is intended for small saltwater fish and is designed to be compact, easy to install, and simple to use. It has a total weight of 8.8 oz., making it one of the lightest saltwater spinning reels on the market.

There are five internal stainless steel bearings, and an extra is included upon purchase. The gear ratio is 6.2:1 and the retrieve is 28 in. per crank. Because it is intended for smaller rods, the max drag is only 7 lbs.

Depending on your preference, you can use the SR1000FG with the following braids: 10/95, 15/85, and 20/65. The mono line capacity is 2/270, 4/140, 6/110 (test/yard).

SR2500FG

The SR2500FG is similar to the SR1000FG and shares many of the same characteristics. It is intended to be slightly heavier, but still works best when fishing for small to medium sized prey. It weighs around 10.6 oz. and has a gear ratio of 6.2:1.

Included in this model are the standard five internal stainless steel bearings, and an extra comes with purchase in case damage occurs. The max drag is a slight improvement at 9 lbs., the retrieve is 32 in. per complete revolution of the handle.

The SR2500FG is compatible with the following braids: 10/170, 15/145, 30/95. The mono line capacity is 6/200, 8/140, 10/120.

SR4000FG

Shimano Spirex FG 4000

Finally, there is the SR4000FG. Although most reel lines will include an option intended for heavy duty saltwater fishing, that is not the case with the SR4000FG. This reel works best when handling medium-sized fish.

This is the heaviest option in the Spirex FG series, weighing 13.9 oz. Like the other models, it includes five stainless steel ball bearings with an extra included in case of damage. The gear ratio is different at 5.7:1, and the retrieve per crank is 33 in. of line. The max drag is 15 lbs., almost twice as much as the previous models.

When it comes to braid and mono line, the SR4000FG is compatible with the following: 15/265, 30/175, 50/145 (braid) and 8/240, 10/200, 12/160 (line).

Consistent Features

Shimano Spirex FG Spinning Reel

The Shimano Spirex FG line is super consistent and focuses on being a high quality yet lightweight fishing reel that is compatible with multiple types of line. The reel is smooth, easy to use, and casts well without pulling the line. The attached casting trigger is additionally a breeze to use and doesn’t jam or pop loose like models in a similar price range.

As mentioned earlier, the frame is made from lightweight graphite and welded from a single piece of metal. This resulted in a seamless design which keeps unwanted saltwater out, helping to reduce the chances of corrosion and electrolysis.

The rotor is attached to the side plate, and the spool is made from cold forged aluminum. The Shimano Spirex FG only comes with a single spool, but it is durable and reliable, even in tough conditions.

Other than these basics, the drag is smooth and the entire reel is easy to install. The only catch is sometimes the Shimano Spirex FG reels will jam when the reel is first installed. After a couple of test casts, this should no longer be a problem.

Finally, there are a couple of additional characteristics worth mentioning. First is the varispeed oscillation, which is great for anglers who want an uncomplicated reel. Second is the fluidrive II, which functions well. Third, there is the dyna-balance system, which keeps the reel functioning well even in the hands of beginners.

Based on its overall features, the Shimano Spirex FG reels are excellent for catching walleye and smallmouth bass.

Conclusion

The Shimano Spirex FG line of fishing reels is a decent choice for anyone engaged in light to moderate saltwater angling. The entire piece functions smoothly and can handle a variety of braids and mono lines, making it a great option for someone who prizes flexibility.

In conclusion, the Shimano Spirex FG is one of the best value spinning reels around today.
